The PlayStation Spot

Monday, February 27. 2006

Today Sony announced their master plan to take over Japan through the establishment of 300 “PlayStation Spots.” What is a PlayStation Spot, you ask? Essentially, they are kiosks from which people can download demo content onto their own PSP (*note: you must have firmware v2.0 or above). PlayStation Spots will be setup in various game shops, cafes and train stations throughout the country. PlayStation Spots are currently serving up the following game demos: Baito Hell 2000, LocoRoco, and Warai no Tamago L Size. Check out the official site for specific listings.

Way to go, Sony. You’re finally catching on. Perhaps this has something to do with the wi-fi (“connection”) success of a certain other handheld gaming device. Now if only Sony would start offering up special items and such instead of just game demos…

Tekken: Dark Resurrection to PSP - Wi-Fi?

Friday, February 17. 2006

Yesterday Namco announced that their popular arcade title, Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, will be making its way to the PSP as Tekken: Dark Resurrection.

The PSP title will be a port of the arcade title, however new characters will be added into the mix. It also seems like an opening movie will be added to the PSP version. The character customization system from Tekken 5 also made it into to the PSP incarnation of the series.

Interestingly, it also looks like you’ll also be able to challenge people over ad-hoc wireless and the internet. Although I haven’t read this at any other site, this sentence on the official site seems to suggest this possibility: “Heated battles with rivals will also unfold in your own home and out on the streets.” It’s possible that I’m just reading too much into this single line, but one can always hope.

Tekken: Dark Resurrection will be out this summer. Head on over to Impress Watch for a plethora of screens.

PSP trial game via flash!

Monday, February 13. 2006

A demo version of AQ Interactive’s PSP title, Jitsuroku Oni Yomi Nikki, is now available online via the official website.

Jitsuroku Oni Yomi Nikki is an interactive adventure-type game that involves more reading than actual gameplay. The main mode of the game, story mode, takes you through 66 humorous chapters. An “Edit mode” will also be included, which allows you to create your own short stories. If that isn’t enough for you, there’s always the slot machine bonus game among a few others.

The demo chapter basically plays out like an interactive manga with character animations and sound effects but no voice acting. In the demo, you assume the role of the husband in a dysfunctional (but in a comical way) marriage. Returning home from work on rainy day, you receive a call from your wife asking you if you want to eat omelet rice, at which point you are given 3 options. No matter which one you pick, the outcome is eventually the same, so I’m not sure how much “interactivity” there is to this game. And thus begin the adventures.

Jitsuroku Oni Yomi Nikki is scheduled for a release next week on 2/23 and will retail for 5,040 yen.
